Wooden toys break down in landfill over time because they are organic matter. Plastic toys do not disappear over time in a landfill; they decompose into tiny toxic microplastics that pollute. With more people becoming aware of the impact of their purchasing choices on the environment, many individuals are likely searching for eco-friendly toys. Can plastic toys be eco-friendly? Yes, plastic toys can be eco-friendly, but it depends on several factors I will list below.
However, plastic toys are being made today more than ever in a sustainable or more Earth-friendly way. We all know that quality varies greatly in goods. This is no different for toys and the quality of plastics. A dollar store cheap plastic toy is made to be disposable, which is the sad truth. Most cheaply made toys in China contain harmful chemicals that are not safe or made to last. On the other hand, sustainable toy companies are using high quality safer plastics that are made to be durable and last. It is imperative to look for plastic toys that do not contain chemicals such as PVC, phthalates, and BPA.
Here are five things to remember when looking for eco-friendly plastic toys: Materials, production process, packaging, durability, and sustainability.
1. What Eco-Friendly Plastic Materials Can Toys be Made From?
The first thing to look for is the type of plastic used in the toy. Not all plastics are created equal, and some are more eco-friendly than others. Toys made from recycled plastics are an eco-friendly option. Green Toys brand (made in the USA) is the most successful at doing this. Green Toys makes all of its toys from recycled plastic milk jugs. The plastic used is safer because it is phthalate-free and made from food-grade plastics. Plus all of their toys do not contain batteries which are not eco-friendly.
Wishbone Design from New Zealand makes ride-on toys from recycled plastic bottles and carpets. Plus, their tires are made to be recycled.
Battat toy company makes a line of their toys that is made to be recycled. However, the plastic used is not made initially from recycled materials. Battat states it is a fully recyclable toy if taken to a proper recycling facility.
Biodegradable plastic:
These plastics are designed to break down faster than traditional plastics, reducing their environmental impact. They can be made from various sources, such as corn starch, cassava, or algae. Food-grade silicone is a more eco-friendly plastic popular with baby toys as it is softer. Mushie Brand (Made in Denmark), makes silicone and PP Plastic toys that are safer and more eco-friendly. They have a whole line of toys for babies and toddlers, including teethers and stackers.
Plant-based plastic:
These are made from plants like sugarcane, a renewable resource that can be regrown. Plant-based plastics can be biodegradable or recyclable, making them an eco-friendly option.
Plant-based plastics are a new trend. The Lego company introduced its first set made from plant-based plastics. This means that the plastics are derived from sugar or corn and mixed with fewer new plastics, reducing petroleum usage. Lego is also a great example of how a plastic toy can be sustainable, because of its durability and ability to be handed down to the next generation. Lego is built from ABS plastic which is hard to break so it doesn’t end up in landfills as much as other plastic toys.
Many large toy companies, such as Fisher Price, are introducing plant-based plastics with classic toys traditionally made with regular plastics. The problem is that most large companies are not sustainable and do not try to be eco-friendly. I feel they are making a couple of eco-friendly products for advertising’s sake, not because they want to change as a whole.
Other: ABS, or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
ABS is a common thermoplastic polymer widely used in various applications, including toys, automotive parts, and electronic housings. This type of thermoplastic falls under the engineering plastics category, which is known for its high strength, toughness, and resistance to impact and heat.
ABS is a petroleum-based plastic and is not biodegradable, meaning it can take hundreds of years to decompose in the environment. However, ABS can be recycled and reused, which can help reduce plastic waste in the background. Overall, while ABS is a strong and durable plastic suitable for many applications, its environmental impact should be considered, and efforts should be made to recycle or properly dispose of ABS products to minimize their environmental impact.
