The firefighter goes along in his fire truck with sirens and lights. Put down the fire with the fire hose on the wagon. Add more BRIO wooden tracks for more action with this firefighter toy set.

H. Thomas & Friends Train Sets (Fisher-Price)
Fisher-Price is a toy brand owned by Mattel, Inc., an American multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company. Fisher-Price produces wooden sets and components for a railway system based on the Thomas characters. While the sets and components are well-constructed with durable plastic, the unique connection shape of Thomas tracks poses a disadvantage as they do not connect with other universal wooden track pieces. Thomas’s signature components include Tidmouth sheds, Cranky at the dock, and Knapford station. Fisher-Price offers a wide range of character engines to complement their track sets. However, one criticism is that Mattel’s sustainability efforts, including transitioning to recycled and recyclable materials, have a long timeline of 2030, which some may find inadequate.
Sustainable Mission
Fisher-Price and its parent company, Mattel, have set goals to improve sustainability in their products and packaging. They aim to achieve 100% recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastic materials by 2030. Additionally, they strive for 95% recycled or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified content in paper and wood fiber used in their products and packaging. 2020 they achieved 97% recycled or FSC-certified paper and wood fiber content. They have also made changes in packaging, such as using more recycled PET plastic and transitioning to single-wall corrugated cartons. They have implemented the How2Recycle label on their packaging to promote recycling. While no specific sustainable mission statement exists, these actions demonstrate their commitment to improving sustainability practices.
Although Thomas is in our hearts, I would choose a more sustainable brand. “Themeless” train sets promote more open-ended play. There are better heirloom-quality wooden train sets on this list for the same price, if not less. They are not in the same league as any of these companies with sustainability. However, the wooden Thomas & Friends Trains below represent the best Wooden Thomas Trains available, and I have included them for your review.
The Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends Wood Busy Island Set is a comprehensive wooden train set with over 40 pieces. It features a track, a Thomas train engine, Jeremy the Jet, a ferry, and seven poseable figures, including people and animals. Thomas & Friends might be the most popular train around. He was even referenced recently in the newest movie, “Bullet Train” with Brad Pitt. Although he has been around for years, he desperately needed a refresh. I was super excited to see his makeover. I created a complete guide to everything new for 2023 in this article. The new Thomas & Friends wooden railroad sets have never gone back to using universal-style wooden tracks! In the past few years, this was a huge complaint among buyers of the train line. Thomas originally had universal tracks that connected to other brands. Then a few years ago, they decided to design their style of wooden path that was incompatible with all others. This meant you had to use an adapter that the Fisher-Price sold to connect to any other brand of wooden train tracks.
Made from sustainably sourced beech wood Fisher-Price produces its wooden sets and components for a complete railway system based on the Thomas characters.
In 2023, Fisher-Price has made more of a build-your-own train system with locations, tracks, and engines mostly sold separately. They seem to have done away with their mid-sized train sets and are focusing on locations such as Tidmouth Sheds, Cranky at the Brendam Docks, and a much better-updated version of Knapford Station. Tidmouth Sheds now includes a track, more working fun parts, and more modern updated coloring. Cranky at the Brenham Dock is much larger, with more working parts and an enormous barge. Also, the new Thomas & Friends line is now made in Indonesia instead of China, which is a definite plus. I wrote an enlightening article on “If Toys Made in China Are Safe.” The new engines are made with sustainable beechwood, with plastic-free packaging made from FSC-certified sustainable materials.

Thomas’s sets and components are wooded with solid construction. The plastic components are durable. Also, Fisher-Price is now using FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council-Certified ) sustainable wood/paper with its packaging and toys. They are now more eco-friendly by packaging with less plastic and responsibly harvesting sustainable beechwood for their toys. Fisher-Price has never been a sustainable company but with this wooden Thomas line and its new packaging, they are working towards something.
