ToggleMelissa & Doug Play Food Swaps | Sustainable Toy Foods
When you ask someone to name a wooden toy brand, most often, the first brand they can think of is Melissa & Doug. They have been around for many years and are readily available at big box stores like Target and online at Amazon. They also have one of the lowest prices for all significant wooden toy companies. However, their toys are priced down for a reason, as the quality of the product dictates the price. Melissa & Doug are known for how badly the paint chips off on their toys and how easily dented the toy becomes. Often parents complain about how the wood on their toys splinters leaving a hazard to their little ones. I am offering some Melissa & Doug Play Food Swaps in this article below.
What are the benefits of Sustainable Pretend Play Food?
There are several benefits to buying pretend play sustainable toy food for children. Here are a few:
- Encourages imaginative play: Pretending to play with sustainable toy food can spark a child’s imagination and inspire creative freedom, which can help with cognitive development, language development, and social-emotional development.
- Eco-friendly: Sustainable toy food is often made from natural materials like wood, bamboo, or recycled plastic, which are more environmentally friendly than traditional plastic toys. Choosing eco-friendly toys helps to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment.
- Safe for children: Sustainable toy food is often made from non-toxic materials, making it safe for children to play with and reducing the risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Durable: Sustainable toy food is often well-made and durable, meaning it can withstand the wear and tear of playtime and last for a long time. This can save money and reduce the need to replace toys constantly.
- Teaches critical life skills: Playing with pretend play sustainable toy food can teach children essential life skills such as food preparation, cooking, and healthy eating habits.
Overall, pretending to play with sustainable toy food can provide children with a fun and safe way to play while also helping promote environmental sustainability and teach essential life skills.
Who is Melissa & Doug?
Melissa & Doug is a toy company that has been in business for over 30 years, and they offer a wide range of toys and games for children of all ages. While they do provide some eco-friendly products, not all of their products are environmentally friendly. For example, some of their products are made from plastic, which can take hundreds of years to decompose and significantly impact the environment. Some products may also use materials or manufacturing processes that hurt the environment.
However, it’s worth noting that Melissa & Doug has taken steps to address environmental concerns. For example, they have implemented sustainable packaging practices, and some of their products are made from sustainably sourced materials. Ultimately, whether or not you consider Melissa & Doug eco-friendly may depend on your definition and standards of what qualifies as environmentally responsible. I will explain why they are NOT comparable to other sustainable toy companies.
Is Melissa & Doug eco-friendly?
Because Melissa & Doug’s toys are not made with natural organic dyes and water-based pigments, their paint can contain acceptable amounts of lead. The wood in their toys can be made from a compressed board or cheap pine constructed in an unsustainable way. Most of their toys are made from compact panels with formaldehyde-based glues. Also, they tend to mix plastics with their wooden play sets to lessen the manufacturing cost. Plastic play food usually contains metals and chemicals, including PVC.
“The Melissa & Doug corporation makes little to no effort to be a sustainable company or to make environmentally friendly toys.”
All of their toys are made in China in various outsourced factories with little oversight from the company. They recently added a sustainability message about what they plan to do, but it’s all greenwashing until I see photos and articles about what they have done.
What is Green Washing, and how to identify it?
Greenwashing is a term used to describe the practice of companies making false or misleading claims about the environmental benefits of their products, services, or procedures. It is meant to create a company appear more environmentally friendly than it is, appeal to environmentally conscious consumers, and gain a competitive advantage.
Greenwashing can take many forms, such as:
- You are making vague or general claims about environmental benefits without providing specific information or proof to back them up.
- Using ambiguous or misleading labels or certifications that suggest a product is environmentally friendly without actually meeting rigorous environmental standards.
- We highlight one environmental benefit of a product or practice while ignoring other negative environmental impacts.
- It is advertising a product or service as being more environmentally friendly than it is, often by making comparisons to less environmentally friendly products or practices.
Consumers can guard against greenwashing by being skeptical of vague or exaggerated environmental claims, looking for clear and specific information to back up environmental claims, and researching a company’s environmental practices and certifications. I recently published a complete article on “What’s a Sustainable Toy? Melissa & Doug would not remotely come close to making a sustainable toy by my definition. I spent countless hours researching the Top Sustainable Toy Companies out there. My findings are published HERE; please let me know what you think!
Why are China toys nasty? There is a price for everything. Melissa & Doug cannot sell their toys at their price point without someone paying the price. A fee is paid, whether it’s cheap labor, cheap materials, or environmentally unfriendly practices. Review my article on China Toys here. It’s pretty shocking when you learn more about the toy industry.
Why are eco-friendly pretend food toys important?
“Play food is one of those toys that can inadvertently end up in a child’s mouth. Most kids pretend to eat what they are cooking, and so they make contact with the toy in their mouths. That is why it is so important to choose safe, reliably made play food that doesn’t chip and is non-toxic.”
Over the years, we have had our fair share of Melissa & Doug toys with five kids in the house. Almost all of our Melissa & Doug toys were not in good enough condition to be handed down after much use. They have not been made to be heirloom quality. We have had to throw out many Melissa & Doug parts because they are unsafe with light usage. I am not saying that all Melissa & Doug toys have terrible quality, as there are a few notable toys they produce of good quality. However, I wish more people could witness the difference between subpar Melissa & Doug and heirloom quality sustainable wooden toys firsthand. It is worth it if you can do the sustainable swap and choose a better company over Melissa & Doug.
Parents sometimes complain about the higher cost of sustainable toys; however, it is worth the cost difference. Giving your child a safer, better-made toy from a reputable company made in an environmentally responsible way is worth every penny. Some of the sustainable swaps I have listed below are only a 5 to 10-dollar difference, nominal for peace of mind. To learn more about our favorite sustainable companies, Click HERE. In this article, I have included four sustainable toy brands: Plan Toys, Tender Leaf Toys, Le Toy Van, and Hape.
Plan Toys is at the top of my list for the highest-quality play food.
All of their play food is made with organic dyes and water-based pigments. Their toys do not chip and are heirloom quality. Plan Toys uses reclaimed rubberwood that is Kiln dried to ensure its safety. Many of their sets are made from sustainable PlanWood, which is water-resistant and dent resistant. Plan Toys also uses E Zero glue made without formaldehyde. My second sustainable toy brand pick is Tender Leaf Toys for their unique designs, quality, and safe toys made without formaldehyde glues.
They also use water-based pigments. Le Toy Van is my 3rd pick as their beautiful toys have unique coloring and fun designs. They use reclaimed rubberwood to be environmentally responsible. Hape is my 4th choice as they are better quality than Melissa & Doug but at the same price. However, they are made in China. Regarding wooden play food, my top two picks for the safest brands are Plan Toys and Tender Leaf Toys.

Melissa & Doug Play Food Swaps Conclusion:
In conclusion, I recommend buying better quality play food even if it costs a bit more. Buying pretend-to-play sustainable toy food has several benefits. It encourages imaginative play, is eco-friendly and made from natural materials, is safe for children, is durable and long-lasting, and teaches essential life skills such as food preparation and healthy eating habits. When buying cheaply made play food, you will spend just as much money replacing the bad quality play food.
Safety has always been my utmost concern as a parent, so choosing toys made with safer materials is an important criterion. Staying away from play food made from plastics is also essential, as these can contain heavy metals and PVC. Learning more about “5 Ways to Reduce Plastics For Your Child” is a great way to begin lessening your child’s plastic exposure. However, it is essential to choose reputable wooden toy companies to purchase toys from so that you know your child is playing with something safe.
A quick search on Amazon for wooden play food will render you many random brands. Almost all of these toys are made unsustainably in 3rd party factories with non-trustworthy productions. If I leave you with one thought, it would be to carefully consider your purchases with these companies because they probably aren’t producing products as safe as they claim to be. When it comes to toys that children potentially mouth, it is essential to play it safe and buy from a reputable and sustainable company. It is also nice to know that these sustainable companies put our children and their safety first, which is most important!
